MAGIC GROW: TEEN EDITION
WE CAN GET OUR OWN SATISFACTION!
Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
I don’t have any knowledge of photoshop, or access to photoshop, so for this project I made 100% of the graphics in Pages on iPad. I ultimately feel like I excelled at using pages! All of the graphics were provided from the Pages shape gallery which has copyright free graphics. The graphics of the symbols were hand drawn on my iPad. I feel that I also excelled at cutting sponges. It was hard and I’d never cut sponges in small shapes before, but it worked! How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I gained inspiration from Chloe Wise. She is one of the artists I am doing for my Comparative Study. She plays with product design in which she reinvents existing products and makes playful spins that often critique society or politics. She offered me great insight into the ways in which I could play with packaging and reimagine the magic grow shapes. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. I began my piece by making the packaging in Pages on iPad. I then cut shapes in sponges which I bought on amazon. I then placed the sponges inside of clear gel capsules. I then removed the plastic from the front of a real magic grow packaging and attached it to the new magic grow packaging. As for the composition, I attempted to mimic the rather ugly (if I do say so myself) aesthetics of the original packaging. The original packing had no clear choices made, rather many random choices that appeared to be jumbled together- I played with this using the original for inspiration while putting my own spin on things. |
IF YOU COULD CONSIDER DOING SOMETHING OVER, EXPLAIN WHY YOU WOULD DO THIS AND WHAT YOU WOULD DO NEXT TIME?
I WOULD MAKE MORE NEXT TIME IF I HAD THE TIME, I THINK IT WOULD BE AWESOME TO HAVE A WALL OF THE MAGIC GROWS INSTEAD OF JUST ONE PACKAGE. I MAY MAKE MORE FOR THE SHOW AND FILL THEM WITH FAKE CAPSULES OF JUST COLORED SPONGE, NO SHAPES. ELABORATE ON HOW THIS PIECE LINKS WITH YOUR OTHER PIECES? WHAT IS THE COMMON THREAD? THIS PIECE CONNECTS TO THE THEME “BOUND AND BROKEN” AS IT PLAYS WITH ANOTHER CONCEPT OF BEING BOUND: BEING BOUND TO SOCIETY, AND IN TURN THE WAY BEING BOUND TO OUR SOCIETY AND IT’S ISSUES HAVE BROKEN MANY TEENS. IT EXPLORES THE HORRORS WHICH TEENS HAVE TO ENDURE AND IT COMMENTS ON HOW DESPITE IT ALL, WHILE IT’S ESSENTIAL WE FIGHT, WE ALSO NEED TO HAVE FUN AND LIVE OUR LIVES. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE AREN’T BROKEN BY WHAT’S HAPPENING. WE MAY BE BOUND TO OUR SOCIETY, BUT WE MAKE OUR OWN STORIES. |
