YIKES
NO REALLY... THIS PIECE IS A BIG “YIKES”
If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
I would try and take a step back to breathe before it was too late. I threw in the towel too immediately and got very frustrated, going forward I hope to remain more composed, or even just fake it till I make it. I hope to remain more calm and patient with myself going forward Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread? The common thread is how we are bound to things. In this piece, she was going to be receiving a game pigeon message from her boyfriend after texting him “we need to talk”, I was attempting to comment on how at a young age kids have begun to bind themselves to relationships, social media, and technology- something that didn’t occur this young even a generation ago. I was trying to discuss the bounds which are placed on the worlds younger demographic |
Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
With this piece I used acrylic on paper. I started by drawing on the base, which I felt was very successful. I was able to master the ability of drawing lightly and I thought that my skills with drawing shone through. However, when it came to the paint, while I was learning a lot about mixing and whatnot, I definitely got very stressed. I had a minor anxiety attack halfway through and kinda just started painting everywhere as an F U to this piece, so I definitely struggled in that respect How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists? I attempted to carry my visuals of women making “weird” faces, in lots of my pieces I have women making different faces that I find humorous, this is an attempt to critique the standards which women are portrayed with in art in which they are often painted softly and composed, as opposed to being openly disgusted or upset with something. I also carried on the theme of words and technology within my piece, specifically with the text bubbles, yet I didn’t follow through with them necessarily.. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements. I began by drawing based on a picture I thought was hilarious of a little girl glaring at a big phone. I began by drawing her on half the page, and then allowing a text message to take up the other half. This was to represent the impact of the text to her, and to maximize its impact on the viewer. I then began by painting the face and body of the girl, using soft colors contrasted with black. However, once I got to the hands I freaked out and it went kinda... everywhere |
