REFLECTION
THIS piece pushed me to explore the medium of ink, as my no experience needed project, i had to learn many new techniques i hadn't previously applied in my work. WITHIN these new techniques, most of my successes and failures fell. I had to implement a new understanding of shading as well as how to work with it, this i feel was one of my successes within this work. i feel like i was able to generate life-like shading throughout the work, and ultimately came away from the piece with a better understanding of how to make my work more realistic. i feel as though this same realistic shading was something i also struggled with, particularly in the hair. generating a life like texture in the hair was something very new to me, it was difficult to apply the same natural shading and values seen in everyday hair to this work, however i feel like i gained a lot from this new experimentation. i gained lots of inspiration from chloe wise, as she often works with ink. i was fascinated by her life like rendering of women through ink. from studying her work i came to understand a lot more in regards to developing realistic faces, and with practice i feel as though i was also able to generate a quite realistic portrait. in this piece i wanted to explore the fact that no one knows what the virgin mary really looks like, and the fact that she is simply portrayed as a everyday white woman (even though she probably wasn't even white!) to capture this generalization of the virgin mary in which she can look like any white woman, as we have no idea what she truly looked like, i went on to instagram and chose to paint one of the first white women i saw on my feed. in doing this i wanted to stress the fact that this iconic figure could be rendered as anyone, due to the limited and narrow minded view we have on her. i then did a rough sketch in pencil, and then applied the ink. the actual painting took around 3 hours total, but i am very pleased with the outcome. after this, i went on line and printed out the phrase "not my mary", a note to the FACT that the virgin mary can be anyone, and that i do not agree with this view of her. i used this printed out text to make a stencil, which i traced and then filled in with ink. |
NOT MY MARY.
