“Some 12 dollar lip balm”

REFLECTION
When working on this piece i Had ro rely heavily on my skills with realistic painting. It is something that is relativelyt ew to ne so it was definitely something TO GET USED TO. I STRUGGLED WHEN IT CAME TOSHADING, AS I AM STILL LEARNING HOW TO GENERATE EFFECTIVE, REALISTIC SHADING. HOWEVER, IN THE SAME SENSE I THINK SHADING is WHAT I MASTERED IN THIS PIECE, BECAUSE I AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY OUTCOME AS FAR AS SHADING GOES AND I FEEL LIK EVENE THOUGH IT WAS AN OBSTACLE WHILE WORKING ON THIS PIECE, I TACKLED IT EFFECTIVELY. I GAINED INSPIRATION FROM TRADITIONAL PAINTINGS OF THE VIRGIN MARY, SPECIFICALLY ONES ORIGINATING FROM LATIN AMERICA. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THEIR USE OF GOLD AND INTERESTING HALO EFFECT WHICH MANY ARTISTS HAVE REPLICATED OVER THE YEARS. I IMPLEMENETED THE SAME HALO EFFECT IN MY PIECE AND ALSO INCORPERATED THE CLOUDS AND ROSES WHICH I SAW REPEATINGIN MANY PIECES DURING RESEARCH. I CHOSE THIS AS IT IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THE RELIGIOUS AESTHETICS WHICH I LOVE, HOWEVER IT WAS AN AREA WITHIN THE GENRE WHICH I HADN’T EXPLORED YET. I STARTED THIS PIECE AS I HAD DONE A STILL LIFE STUDY OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS IN THE PAST, AND WANTED TO TRANFER IT TO A COMPLETE WORK ON A REAL CANVAS. I BEGAN BY PAINTING THE HALO EFFECT IN THE BACKGROUND, I FELT LIKE IT WAS A RISK BUT IT PAYED OFF IN THE END. I THEN BEGAN BY PAINTING THE LIP BALM ITSELF. THIS TOOK THE LONGEST TIME. I LEARNED THAT DUE TO THE GOLD BACKGROUND I WOUL DNEED TO MIX THE GOLD PAINT WITH ANY BLACKS/GREYS I USED IN SHADING THE BACKGROUND TO MAINTAIN THE METALLIC INTEGRITY OF THE PIECE. ONCE THE CENTRAL AREA WAS COMPLETE, I WENT IN AND EXPERIMENETED WITH CLOUDS, MY GOAL WAS TO SHOW THEM RADIATING FROM THE HALO ITSELF. FINALLY, I ADDED SOME ROSES, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE NOT CLEAN BY ANY MEANS, I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THEM BECAUSE I LOVE THE POP OF COLOR THEYADD TO THE PIECE AS WELL AS THE DISTINCT YET VAGUE NATURE OF THEM, IT IS CLEAR THEY ARE ROSES, YET THEY ARE SEEMINGLY BLURRED. |
